Smithsmania had reached Liverpool and the gig was a complete success. People
traveled from all around North West England and even from Ireland to witness
the phenomenon that was the Smiths. Security had to be increased on the
college campus. Many people already knew the words to the songs. Titles were
being requested in between songs, enough that Morrissey had to shush the
audience at times.
The band came on stage and Morrissey said "You don't have to be so shy" as a
greeting and then launched into "Handsome Devil". The song was very well
received and Morrissey had to shush the crowd before going into the second
song. "This Charming Man" which was in the charts at the time and had just
been performed on Top Of The Pops was the hit of the evening. The fans sang
along with Morrissey to every word and cheered profusely after its
performance.
This concert saw the re-introduction of "Wonderful Woman" which had been
pretty much left out of the setlist in the past two months. In it Morrissey
sang "Ah answer me" instead of "I ask myself". Before "How Soon Is Now?" and
"There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "Reel Around The Fountain" was a fans'
favourite in 1983. It was requested in between every song performed. When the
Smiths were about to play it, not knowing it was next on the setlist, someone
shouted clearly the song's title in a break when the crowd got quieter. He was
heard by Morrissey who just said "okay!" as if agreeing to his request and
they launched into the song.
"Miserable Lie" was again the standard main set closer. At the end of its fast
paced outro, Morrissey shouted the traditional "Goodbye!" and the band left
stage. They were soon cheered back on for an encore consisting of "You've Got
Everything Now" in which Morrissey changed some words to "No I've never had a
job, because I'm too handsome", as well as a second helping of "This Charming
Man".
BOOTLEGS
A reasonably good recording of this concert can be found from bootleg traders,
sometimes under the title "Gladioli All Over". Alternate recordings of
"Wonderful Woman" and "Reel Around The Fountain" can be found on "College
Heroes" which is produced around the 17 November 1983 concert. MP3s are also
downloadable from the usual networks.
