I'm sorry, but I don't remember anything about the Reading show at all. It was quite a long time ago I guess, and one of the drawbacks of seeing so many Smiths shows is that they sort of blur into one big mass after a while. When you're recording shows you don't really have time to enjoy them as much either. First you have to sneak your equipment into the venue, then you're checking out the venue and the sound system trying to work out the best place to stand for optimum sound. Then you're constantly revising this as the hall fills up and the people standing next to you sound like they'll be big talkers etc. Then during the show you're keeping an eye out for the security people, moving around slightly to avoid noisy neighbours, and checking your watch to see if its time to turn the tape over yet. So while you get to know the set pretty well, some of the more subtle changes pass over your head until you listen back to the recording. So I guess you need something out of the ordinary to keep a show in your memory after all these years, and I suppose that Reading just didn't have any for me. After a while driving around the country in a VM Camper Van looking for Venues can get a bit samey. I guess that's were bands get that ... 'if this is Monday it must be Reading' from.
You guys certainly seem to be more adept at analysing the performances, and picking out the subtle changes in the way certain songs are played. I guess one of the reasons I'm trying to tell the stories behind the shows is that I realise how fragile memories are. There's a book where fans wrote a few paragraphs about what a Smiths song meant to them ... again my memory fails as to the title. But one story was by someone I know, and their story was significantly different from my recollection of the events depicted. My memory of those events seems very clear, but trying to remember other events around the same time I found I couldn't place them cronologically ... at least I thought I could, but looking at actual dates (like gigs) showed I'd obviously got it wrong. So it seems a good idea to get things down in writing before evrything is lost or corrupted forever. There's so much mis-information out there already. There is a regular column in the Sunday Times where someone writes about what a particular song means to them. A couple of weeks ago it was 'This Charming Man' ... and the writer explained how he'd come up to London to live in 1984, heard 'This Charming Man' on TOTPs thought it was wonderful, then a few weeks later watched them blow headliners, the Gang Of Four off the stage at the Lyceum. Either he's making this up for a good story, or he lives his life backwards. He probably believes it's true. Anyway ...
Again we both recorded this show ... and this is my recording, done using a Sony Professional Walkman with Sony EMC-929LT Mic onto Metal tape.
