For a number of reasons, I didn't record the Smiths again until November. Although working at Camden Market meant that I managed to pick up 1st gen copies of most of the London shows, as people would come to the stalls with stuff they'd recorded to trade.
Anyway ... my sister was at Manchester university, so I arranged to come and visit, and she got us tickets for the Hacienda show. There were always flowers at Smiths gigs at that time, but the Hacienda was drowning in them that night with a heavy perfume in the air. The Smiths were recording TOTPs that night, and flew bcak to do this gig, so it was quite late when then came on. People were getting quite restless as time ticked on, and when they came on the place went wild. It was one of the best Smiths shows I've seen, with a real celebratory atmosphere. I still hadn't got my professional walkman, so this was recorded with auto levels.

What happened at the beginning of Still Ill?!
Another nice quality early recording. Thanks Steve. Particularly like Reel Around The Fountain.
Does anyone think that an EQ pass would help this recording? It's good quality, but lacks the lower EQs. I don't know a lot about the pros and cons of messing with a master.

I've always held off re-mastering recordings as much as possible. It's very easy to make things worse, particularly if you're not using the best software/equipment. I've got some excellent monitoring speakers/amps here, which are essential for good remastering, and while it seems relatively easy to get something that seems like an improvement ... you often find that you've over-done something which stares out at you after a while. A lot of people are mastering with limited monitoring (any of those plug in computer speakers for instance) and then they're really correcting for the shortcomings of those speakers. So while it might sound impressive on those speakers, it sounds awful on a decent Hi-Fi.
The other thing is you can't really put back what isn't there. If it lacks bass, you can't really add it back. You can try to cut other frequencies to rebalance the sound, and there is software that atificially adds harmonics to make it sound as though there is more bass, which sometime works reasonably. So you have to be really careful.
But ultimately once you've messed with the master you can't go back. So these days I just put out as close to the straight master as I can. If people want to subsequenty remaster it for themselves, then fine ... at least they have the orginal sound to work with.

Big thanks for this, Steve - I'm already looking forward to the next instalment!
These torrents have the makings of a classic series - does anyone fancy doing some artwork?

Hi Steve,
Another member commented on how much he liked your New Order recordings. Are those still available somewhere? (smithstorrents is just Smiths, right? ;)
Thanks,
Andy
