Six weeks after its surprise debut, Apex Legends is getting its first premium progression pass. Respawn Entertainment announced today that it is launching the Season 1 Battle Pass for Apex Legends on Tuesday, March 18. Respawn is selling the pass, called Wild Frontier, for 950 in-game coins, which is about $9.50. As with other progression plans, the Apex Legends Battle Pass gives players the chance to earn more cosmetic items. Once you purchase this, you can level it up by playing the game and completing challenges.
Respawn is following Fortnite’s structure quite closely, it seems. You’ll get the standard battle pass for 950 Apex coins, or $9.50. You can also pay $28 to purchase the battle pass and unlock the first 25 tiers straight away. Similar to Fortnite, Respawn confirms that you can earn rewards even if you don’t buy the battle pass, including five free Apex packs, one legendary skin for what appears to be the new Octane legend, and 18 stat-tracker customization options for your in-game banner.
While Octane’s abilities aren’t yet visible on the game’s official website, Sony’s PlayStation Blog gave us a preview of what the character can do. Most of Octane’s abilities are built around his health. His tactical ability allows him to move faster than normal, but costs a percentage of his health to activate and only lasts a few seconds. To offset this, Octane’s passive ability grants him healing whenever he isn’t being shot at, allowing him to slowly gain back the health he has either lost or spent. Fans can also buy the Battle Pass Bundle, which unlocks the next 25 Battle Pass levels and their respective rewards automatically for 2,800 Apex Coins ($28 US). The Battle Pass is scheduled to drop at 10 a.m. PT (which would theoretically drop it at 1 p.m. ET/5 p.m. UK/4 a.m. March 20 AET).
Because Apex Legends is built on a hero system, where individual characters bring unique skills, weapons and gear to the game, Apex can offer new hero characters as part of the Battle Pass. This deviates from Fortnite’s suite of virtual products that offer no in-game advantage and are only cosmetic.
Wild Frontier is the name of Season 1, and the big addition seems to be the incoming new character, Octane. There's no official date for their arrival, although we'd expect them to come with the start of Season 1! Other than Octane's impending arrival, there are some themed skins - although that theme doesn't seem to be much more than the ususal Apex Legends junkyard aesthetic, with some matching orangey-yellow colours. Lovely.
