I was watching a Smiths documentary today and some guy was at the piano explaining something about the Smiths use of a standard blues chord, when it hit me that The Smiths didn't use keyboards, at least live. I don't why I never thought about that before. I'm sure there are songs that have some keyboards in them, so did they just not play those songs live. Asleep comes to mind.

i for one am over the moon that the smiths emoted plenty without the indulgence of keys/synths. there was certainly enough of that to go around. i love to pull nice punchy live recordings out for my friends who think the smiths were wimps... any number of gigs often dispelled the myth

They found a piano in Inverness. I read somewhere that they were going to play it in the gig, but I don't remember where I read it. You can hear it on the soundcheck.

But yes, never a live keyboard.

Think they played Asleep live at that date, the recording is on here somewhere - as the song is so quiet you can here the crowd talking quite a lot.
Keyboards/synths live wouldn't have fitted in with The Smiths' ethos imho though they did use them (or session players did) in the studio on occasion.
Nowt wrong with a bit of piano though :-)

Hello!
"A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours" have synths, actually.
Also, you can find some keyboards in "Oscillate Wildly".

neither were ever played live by the smiths, though.
