The Smiths
"Extended Rank"
The three broadcasted songs missing from the official 'Rank' live album
----------
SOURCE
Radio 1 FM "In Concert" broadcast
The Smiths live at the National Ballroom, Kilburn, London on 23 October 1986
LINEAGE
Original capture:
Roof Aerial>Marantz ST151L Tuner>Aiwa ADF770 3-Head Cassette Deck (record)> TDK-SA (Type II) cassette tape
Conversion:
Original cassette tape>Aiwa ADF770 3-Head Cassette Deck (play)>SB Extigy soundcard>CoolEdit Pro 2.1>WAV>Archived CD-R>EAC>WAV>TLH>FLAC
Additional editing:
Above source recorded and seeded by Chris Poor (January 2014)>WAV>Adobe Audition editing>FLAC
NOTES
The seeded tape ran slightly too fast so was slowed down using the Rank album and a (lossy) BBC 6Music rebroadcast as a guide
The volume was also reduced a little to match up to the Rank album; a few additional minor tweaks during the crowd noise at the end
of the tracks were also undertaken to create a more seamless join if/when the tracks are inserted into the official Rank release
The Rank version used as a guide was the new 2011 remaster overseen by Johnny Marr himself, that is likely to stand as the best
quality for the immediately foreseeable years
----------
TRACKLIST
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Frankly, Mr Shankly
How Soon Is Now?
CREATE AN "Extended Rank" ALBUM:
Take your official 'Rank' album and insert these 3 tracks as follows
01. The Queen Is Dead
02. Panic
03. Vicar In A Tutu
04. THERE IS A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT
05. Ask
06. Rusholme Ruffians
07. FRANKLY, MR SHANKLY
08. The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
09. What She Said
10. Is It Really So Strange?
11. Cemetry Gates
12. London
13. I Know It's Over
14. The Draize Train
15. HOW SOON IS NOW?
16. Still Ill
17. Bigmouth Strikes Again
Further information:
Three further songs performed (I Want The One I Can't Have, Never Had No One Ever & Meat Is Murder) have never been either broadcast or officially released and so remain unavailable. As the BBC did not broadcast them either in 1986 or during any subsequent rebroadcasts over the decades it could perhaps be assumed that at least the BBC's own archived copy has seen these three songs lost to the cutting room floor.

I spoke to Grant Showbiz about this gig.
The BBC took separate recordings from each band member and then some others from well placed microphones. Rank was mixed by Grant using those separate tracks.
Of course he also has the cassette from the soundboard that he took on the night. It sits in a cardboard box alongside the other unreleased soundboard recordings. *sigh*

Hi, listening to Rank (official) tonight for the 1st time in about 10 years (!), sounds so amazing, and now I really want to listen to the whole gig.
These are the 3 (radio sourced) missing tracks, fine, but on which bootleg can I find the best sounding 'other' remaining tracks ? (I want the one/never had/murder)
Thanks ! :-)

Thanks, finally completed the puzzle !
Don't have a clue why I have waited so long to do this. Been listening for almost 30 years now. (!)
PS The bootleg missing songs sound pretty terrible, compared to the radio sourced, obviously. :?
