Hi,
a question that popped into my head in the wee small hours of the morning: did The Smiths ever play support to other bands? I'd always assumed that they headlined pretty much from the start, such was the buzz surrounding them in 1983 and 84 but that would be a very unusual state of affairs for a new band.

I saw them first at ULU on the 6th May. They were 3rd of the bill then, supporting the sisters of mercy and flesh for lulu. Then again supporting the sisters at the Brixton Ace in June.
They did a couple more supports at the Lyceum that summer supporting Howard Devoto and the Gang Of four

This question was asked recently on the morrissey-solo site and there was eventually a full list, if you want to go over there and find it.

Was it The Police that Moz refused to support on a US tour saying something to the effect that "The Smiths are a far more important group than The Police"?
Or have I just made it up.... ;-)
