Do you have a copy of this CD ?
Have you played it or looked at it recently ?
Does it still play OK ?
Is it still silver ?
Or has it gone bronze ?
During the late eighties as uptake of CD as the new music media took off
there was a shortage of manufacturing capacity.
Consequently plants that had not been designed from the outset for CD
manufacturing were pressed (sic) into use.
One of these was the PDO plant in Blackburn, Lancashire which had been
built to make 12" video discs originally. The manufacturing process was
not as good as in other factories and the silver layer was not as well
sealed in. Consequently this layer becomes oxidized and changes colour.
Eventually they may become unplayable, however due to the small amount
of music on these discs (The Smiths EP) I think this is unlikely.
