Anyone seen the John Lewis advert featuring the song "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want", talk about destroying a quality song :x

Personally i don't mind that version.. the advert is a bit sickly though. When I first saw it I said to my wife (who is not a Smiths fan at all) "hey that's a Smiths song" and she replied "is it? but that sounded good".

Not sure the band could prevent a cover of their song from being used, they could prevent their recording being used though.
So long as Sheila's Wheels don't start using "Sheila Take A Bow"......
Edit: Just had a look via NewsNow and they did seek permission from Moz. Doesn't say anything about Marr so maybe they just did it out of courtesy and because they know he's an awkward get!

Johnny tweeted an excellent youtube rant from Henry Rollins about 'selling out' and music used in adverts. www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6zVUvmkyvA
Personally I don't see what the problem is. Why shouldn't they be allowed to make some cash from the work they did. Don't see why so many people seem to think that bands shouldn't be allowed to do that.

They are primarily a butchers.
Not really. They're a fairly high end department store.

I suggest you don't shop there if it upsets you.
John Lewis are also a Parnership rather than a company. So they are are workers co-operative. The profits shared among the employees, rather than given to shareholders etc.
Seems like quite a good thing to support I would say.

Agree with all Steve's said above.
As long as the cover version isn't awful (this one isn't) i've no problems with it being used in an ad as long as the ad is for something not entirely unethical.
I'm more bothered about the current VW ad that uses a truly appalling cover version of "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys, very annoying!

Hi Steve,
I've recently been enjoying your wonderful recordings of the 1985 Scottish tour (and many others). Thank you very much for these. Though Meat Is Murder has never been one of my favourite songs, I was struck once again by the extraordinary passion Morrissey put into those live performances.
Recently there were the stories of Morrissey rushing off a festival stage at the whiff of a hamburger stall.
If he pushed a trolley around Waitrose, what would he see? At this time of year the stores are full of turkeys for us to festively slice.
Morrissey and Marr will tell a Tory PM that he is not allowed to like The Smiths. Morrissey continues to make digs at the British Royal Family when the opportunity arises. A tad predictable, perhaps, but at least it's consistent.
Another thought - yes, two! - niggles in my mind. If it's true that Morrissey/Marr had the power to veto use of the song, and they allowed it, money must have been the motivating factor (shock). It makes me wonder, therefore, what else might be on the cards. A 75% Smiths reunion, perhaps.
Thanks again for the great recordings and a great website.
All the best,
Mark

Hey Mark,
Morrissey and Marr wrote the song for one of their singles, which was released by a record company. Money was a motivating factor (shock).
Don't know why people seem to insist that bands should have no monetary needs
