It's called "Hang the DJ: The Very Best of the Smiths."
Disc one:
"Hand In Glove"
"Reel Around The Fountain"
"This Charming Man"
"What Difference Does It Make"
"Still Ill"
"Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now"
"William, It Was Really Nothing"
"How Soon Is Now?"
"Shakespeare's Sister"
"Barbarism Begins At Home"
"That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore"
"The Headmaster Ritual"
"The Boy With The Thorn In His Side"
"Bigmouth Strikes Again"
"There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"
"Panic"
"Ask"
"You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby"
"Shoplifters Of The World Unite"
"Sheila Take A Bow"
"Girlfriend In A Coma"
"I Started Something I Couldn't Finish"
"Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me"
Disc two:
"Handsome Devil: (Live)
"Jeane:
"This Charming Man: (New York vocal)
"Back To The Old House"
"These Things Take Time"
"Girl Afraid"
"Please, Please Please Let Me Get What I Want"
"Oscillate Wildly"
"Stretch Out And Wait"
"Meat Is Murder" (Live in Oxford)
"Asleep"
"Money Changes Everything"
"The Queen Is Dead"
"Vicar In A Tutu"
"Cemetry Gates"
"Half A Person"
"Sweet And Tender Hooligan"
"I Keep Mine Hidden"
"Pretty Girls Make Graves" (Troy Tate version)
"Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before"
"What's The World" (Live in Glasgow)
CD2 is supposedly rarities, live, etc... I'm skeptical. what do you guys think?

I'm not sure this will be ready for October 7th.
I think the first cd makes a lot of sense, but I would drop "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby" and replace it with "Stop Me..." from the second cd.
The second cd is a bit schizophrenic. It's a mix of favourites that couldn't fit on cd1 (Asleep, Please, House, Queen) and rarities to have the older fans also want to buy it. From the second cd I would drop the "This Charming Man" remix (the original is on the first cd) and one of the two instrumentals, maybe even both. I would also drop the live "What's The World" cover. I'm not so sure "Vicar In A Tutu" should be on there as well. Actually I would drop the rarities and keep those for the boxset. If this is a 'very best of', then the songs on cd2 should be fan favourites. Then perhaps we could fit at least four or five of the following songs:
"Nowhere Fast"
"Well I Wonder"
"Rubber Ring"
"This Night Has Opened My Eyes"
"Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others"
"Wonderful Woman"
"London"
"Paint A Vulgar Picture"
"Is It Really So Strange?"
"I Know It's Over"

I've seen different tracklists around for this cd, is 'Reel Around The Fountain' definitely on there? I think the disc two tracklist might be incomplete; 'Wonderful Woman' may be included along with a live version of 'London' (Kilburn 86). I don't see the point of including a track available on 'Rank' when a few good b sides have been omitted.
Rubber Ring and Nowhere Fast should have been on cd2. The live take of 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others' would have been a better choice than 'What's The World' for example. Does anyone know if 'Back To The Old House' and 'These Things Take Time' are studio or session versions?
Has anything further been said about the boxset Stephane?

So I guess Hang the DJ became The Sound of the Smiths.
It's not god awful but a little redundant.
The only thing that I like is that Morrissey coined the title and Marr took part in the mastering.

I just listened to this for the first time. The mastering is incredible; I don't know if I can go back to listening to the originals. Are there plans to do this for the rest of their material?

Got my bro-in-law and sis this for Christmas, it was them that introduced me to The Smiths 20 years ago.
Not listened to it, obviously, but glad it meets all your approvals!
I actually have The Very Best Of myself and love that, whoever did the mastering did a good job on that one in my humble - well apart from This Charming Man which sounds a bit flat.
Only thing that annoys me about The Sound Of The Smiths is using the Peel version of What Difference Does It Make, i like that but it seems odd to pick that over the single/album version when Disc A is Singles(including scrapped and import-only singles).
Also, would have been nice if they could have got Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before on that disc, instead of Nowhere Fast which as far as i can tell is the only song on the first disc that wasn't intended as a single anywhere.

Actually "Nowhere Fast" was intended as a single at some point. But the Smiths ended up re-releasing "How Soon Is Now" instead.

Is there any word of getting "all the regular albums to sound right" aside from Johnny saying so here?

I wonder what possessed them to put the pointless NY mix of TCM on rather than the London version?
