The Smiths
Studio 54, Barcelona, Spain
16 may 1985
Source: NTSC VHS (likely one or two generations down from a PAL master) -> DVD-R
Torrent created on 30 July 2008 by Stephane from "Passions Just Like Mine".

Release Notes
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This professionally filmed recording is the one which the makers of the Spanish "Arsenal" television special on the Smiths worked with. The complete concert is featured and the footage is raw, in the sense that it doesn't have the special effects (slow-mo, superimposed footage) that the documentary has. The quality is reasonable, the transfer lacks a bit of colour and has flying horizontal lines through it (typical of PAL to NTSC transfers) but this is minor and still very watchable.
After so many years, this recording is an unexpected treat for collectors of visual bootlegs of the Smiths. There are only a handful of professionally filmed bootlegs for the band, plus another handful and a half of audience recordings (thanks Steve!). The only visual recording one might have expected to surface at this point in time was the Hacienda concert from February 1983, but it turns out that there was something else out there we didn't have. Thanks to Richard McManus for sharing this treasure he wasn't aware he had.

Barcelona was treated to more or less the same setlist as Rome, including the rarer "This Charming Man". "Barbarism Begins At Home" returned to the set while the lesser known "Stretch Out And Wait" was not played.
"I Want The One I Can't Have" was simply introduced with "Thank you, this song is called 'I Want The One I Can't Have'." Before "This Charming Man", Morrissey said "Thank you Barcelona... come close, please don't be shy..." The Smiths' latest single was introduced with "Thank you... this is our new single, 'Shakespeare's Sister'." After its performance Morrissey added "Thank you we're glad you came... thank you..." Before "Still Ill" he enquired "Does anybody understand English? (crowd: yeah!) Good...!"
This concert was filmed and seven songs ("Hand In Glove", "Handsome Devil", "Barbarism Begins At Home", "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", "Rusholme Ruffians", "The Headmaster Ritual" and "Miserable Lie") were shown in a Spanish one-hour special on the Smiths titled "Arsenal". The special also included interviews with Morrissey and Johnny Marr as well as studio songs.
BOOTLEGS
The "Arsenal" special mentioned above is commonly circulated on bootleg VHS and DVDs. The original video recording from which the makers of the latter television special took their footage is also available to collectors. Because this is professionally filmed the quality is quite good, but one should not expect it to be as good as the bootlegs from digital rebroadcasts of concerts from the same era because it was transfered from VHS, sometimes a few generations down from the master. The fact that this recording features the complete concert doesn't make the Arsenal special obsolete because the latter also features great interviews with Morrissey and Marr.
The audio recording of the complete concert which is traded amongst collectors on compact disc and in digital format on the internet is actually the audio from the professionally filmed concert recording above.

Well you're welcome to download it and compare. If your copy is better it would be nice if you could put it up here. I'm sure there's a better version of this show out there. It turns out quite a few people here already had this.
I keep hearing of people who, like you, have rare stuff but keep it to themselves. One way or another, it would be nice if more fans shared what they have. If it wasn't for Steve and a handful of others this site would be dead. The more we share, the more others might contribute and in the end we'll all benefit.
