//Hand In Glove The Smiths returned again to London, this time as headliners to a sold-out
show. Johnny Waller from Sounds magazine described them as "effortlessly
brilliant". From the advert: "Magazine and Velvets' rawpower" and "Percusive
popular dance music"! Halfway into "What Difference Does It Make?", Morrissey changed the usual
melody of the line "...just because you ask me to" by bunching the words
together. After the song he asked "Can I have some more voice mister monitor
man, please?... Thank you, more voice... I can't hear what I'm singing...
can you hear me?... See, nobody can hear me! (someone shouts 'turn the bass
up!') Turn the bass? Bass up or down? (people shout 'down!')". In "Wonderful Woman", Morrisey still sang "Ah answer me, what to be done with
her?" instead of what would be recorded a few months later, "I ask myself,
what to be said of her?". The night was really sweaty, prompting Morrissey to
comment: "You'll have to bring your swimwear next time... pass out if you want
to". "These Things Take Time" was next in the setlist, it started with a drum
roll, something that would be lost on the version that would appear on the
"What Difference Does It Make?" single six months down the road. "I Don't Owe You Anything" was introduced as "A song for the delicate". After
"Miserable Lie" Morrissey gave a quick "Goodbye!" as was the habit at that
time and the band left stage. They came back for the first encore, "Accept
Yourself". In the version as sung at the time, Morrissey yelped twice after
the line "Time is against me now". After the song there was another "Goodbye!"
and the band left stage once more. The demand was such that the Smiths had
to return for a second encore. Entering stage, Morrissey said "You're
disturbing the peace... not really... too bad you're gonna have 'Hand In
Glove' again" and the band launched into a second serving of the Smiths'
first single. BOOTLEGS This concert was shown at the February 1997 Smiths convention where Mike
Joyce and Andy Rourke were present. The audio can be found (minus the first
two tracks) on the "Wonderful Woman" bootleg coupled with 4 radio sessions,
3 Troy Tate sessions, "What's The World" from 25 September 1985 and "You've
Got Everything Now" from 21 April 1984. The concert tracks alone were lifted
from "Wonderful Woman" and circulated on a fanmade CD-R titled "Rock Garden
83". It seems like the whole concert might also be available from bootleg traders,
in inferior quality. The "Wonderful Woman" and "Rock Garden 83" mentioned above are easily found
on the bigger file sharing networks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
